It’s not every day that we get to work with international authors and illustrators (though we would like to), so we were especially excited when presented with an opportunity to make a book with a celebrated Icelandic illustrator, Linda Olafsdottir. Linda has illustrated a number of books in her signature style, but we have the honor of publishing her first book as both author and illustrator.
Linda has a BFA from the Icelandic Academy of Arts and an MFA in illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Beyond the world of books, her illustrations have also appeared on stamps, cereal boxes, and children’s clothing! Linda was nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2013 and received the Spring Breeze Awards from the International Board of Books for Young People in 2014. She also received Reykjavík’s Children’s Literature Award in 2016. Linda’s joy in creating art is truly evident when you see her work.
Her first book with us, Play?, was released earlier this month, and we are in love. It’s a joyful and sweet picture book with a retro feel, and the illustrations of the four characters – Phil and Puff and Frida and Fox – are absolutely adorable. Phil and his stuffed puffin buddy, Puff, do everything together. Frida and her stuffed fox friend, Fox, do everything together, too. But what about all of them playing together? Hmmm.
Play? is a great book for young readers, ages one to five, and also has a great message for adults, reminding us that fun things can happen when we make an effort to reach out to others. And to reach back when they extend an offer!
Linda Olafsdottir draws, paints, and writes from her home studio in in Reykjavík, Iceland. She has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and received Reykjavík’s Children’s Literature Award in 2016. Play? is her debut book as an author and illustrator.
